Post Shoveling Soreness

I’m not sure what was going through my mind when I decided to shovel part of my neighbor’s driveway yesterday, but today I’m completely hating myself for doing a good deed. My lower back is on fiahhhh! Actually, my entire body is hurting, and I probably could have gotten away with not doing a strength workout prior to the shoveling, but oh well!

In the past week, I’ve only worked 2 half days, so waking up to an alarm this morning was extremely confusing. I forgot how many times I typically hit snooze and I ended up with roughly 5 minutes less time to workout. It might not seem like a lot, but it was the difference between my typical 4 mile runs and the 3.6 I had time for this morning.

Morning Workout

• 3.6 mile run
• 4 sets of 15 stair push-ups
• 50 heel touchers
• 50 crunches
• 1 minute plank hold and 30 second holds on both sides
• 2 sets of leg circles – 10 clockwise and 10 counterclockwise
• 25 bicycle crunches each side (total 50)
• Stretching

20121231-110622.jpg
I wanted to break free of my core workout rut, and included several of the new moves Heather threw my way last week. The leg circles are a killer and highly recommended!!

Breakfast

I’m still out of frozen strawberries and the grocery store didn’t have any in stock yesterday, so I had to play around with the frozen fruit I had on hand. I enjoyed a protein shake with vanilla protein powder, almond milk, ½ frozen banana, 3 frozen peach slices and a spoonful of PB2 since it was a little bland.

I didn’t finished it since it wasn’t the best, but I did enjoy a Chobani Strawberry Banana yogurt bowl several hours later at work with PB2, chia seeds and oats. SO GOOD!

This week is another relatively easy week since I have tomorrow off for the holiday, but I’m looking forward to my weeks going back to normal. Last week I felt like I didn’t complete a training workout in its entirety. With all the running around, dates, and family time, I realized that my strength workouts were bits and pieces of previous training workouts. It’s not a bad thing, but I’m excited for more structured strength workouts!

I completely failed with my veggie intake yesterday, but today is jam packed with the good stuff. I have 3 servings of veggies for today’s work day, and tonight Mark and I are going to be making dinner together. The menu includes pork loin (I accidentally typed lion first… pork lion, yum!) and veggies.

Since my gym closes at 2 today, I’ll be taking an early lunch to swing by for a light session of some form of exercise before date night begins with Mark!

We debated going out for dinner and then relaxing at his place after, but knowing how busy restaurants would be, we didn’t feel like having dinner at 4:30 or 9:00 pm, so we’ll be ringing in the New Year with our first home cooked meal together and movies all night. Talk about the perfect night in! J

Do you have any fun New Year’s Eve plans? Do you typically like staying in or going out?

I’ve never done the bar scene for NYE and really never want to, and last year I went to several house parties with friends, but staying in with loved ones is more my scene. I’m such a homebody!

Sweating Out the Bad Stuff

Last night’s date was a success! Jay and I met at one of my favorite pool bars, sadly not the swim up kind. We ended up grabbing a drink and playing 4 games of pool while talking and getting to know one another.

20121206-083831.jpg
Jay was really sweet and a good guy, definitely not the outgoing and flirty types I’m used to, I’d say he was more so of the shy kind, but at the end of the night, I’m glad I went out. I’ll put it this way. If he were to ask me out again I’d say yes, but I’m not staring at my phone hoping to hear from him.

It was almost like a high school reunion at Jillian’s last night because I saw so many familiar faces, not necessarily from my class, but that I knew throughout my high school years. I even saw one of my best friends crushes, who was at the table 3 down from us.

Back in our early high school days, he used to have a crush on me and would run around their work yelling, “Alison Kendraaaa!” Really not sure how he ever found out my middle name, but I couldn’t help but to smile when that memory popped into my head. I had to text Jen right away and she wanted me to go up to him and say hi and that she said hi too. I had to pass, since I really didn’t want to look like a creep! Apparently she’s going to go up to him today and ask how pool was last night. Oh dear lord!

Breakfast

20121206-083933.jpg
Breakfast this morning included a chocolate peanut butter protein shake and grapefruit.

20121206-084008.jpg
The addition of REAL peanut butter and not my PB2 made this bad boy extra creamy and extra delicious! Tasted just like one of my brother’s famous protein shakes, which I’ll get to enjoy for an entire week starting on Christmas Eve! 🙂

Breakfast hit the spot after a sweaty morning run. I haven’t sweated that much on a run in I don’t even know how long. Maybe it was from the beer last night, or the bread with butter I ate when I got home. That’s a healthy dinner right? Just sweating out all the bad food I ate last night.

Today’s a new day and I’m actually very excited to have a free night so that I can have a proper dinner, get some blog work done (switch to a self-hosting site and contact a designer), and relax with a good book. Ahhhh is it 5 o’clock yet?!

I’ve Got a Double Whammy Post-Holiday Monday Blues

I don’t know about you guys, but it sure was difficult to get up this morning, plus it didn’t help that I stayed up until 10 pm watching Hitched for the Holidays, with heartthrob Joey Lawrence.

Typically I am in bed and reading from 9 until 10, or before if I’m exhausted, that way I don’t have the annoying TV syndrome to keep me wired and awake late into the night. Last night I made an exception since I was in the holiday mood, and I just have to gush over how funny and cute the movie was!

By the time I was in brushed and in bed, it was a little after 10, and I HAD to listen to Lisha explain a new show on MTV, so I was ready for shuteye around quarter of 11. Ick.

In all seriousness, have you guys heard of the show called, Catfish? We think the title is a ripoff of Plentyoffish. According to Lisha, it’s almost like, “True Life,” but the people on the show have been dating someone online for years + and they contact this man who I’m assuming is the host of the show to schedule a meeting.

Just read Lisha’s descriptions:

Basically I NEED to watch this show, especially since I love online dating! Luckily I’ve never had horror stories like this before, and only some guys have looked a little different in person.

**

This morning I woke up 5 minutes before my alarm was scheduled to go off. Isn’t that the worst? I was so excited to look at the clock and get a warm greeting that I still had several extra hours to sleep, but not this morning.

I dragged myself out of bed and pouted in the bathroom before I went for a miserable run. My body is definitely not used to running this early, even if it had only been since Wednesday that I ran at 6.

Morning Workout

  • 3.7 mile run
  • 3 sets of 15 stair push-ups
  • 1 minute plank and 30 seconds each side
  • 50 crunches and 50 side-to-side crunches
  • 50 heel touchers
  • 100’s abs
  • 30 scissors
  • Stretching

It felt great to be pressed for time again and be able to get down to business with my workouts. I think lacking that time frame to get my workouts in on the weekends result in me ignoring my core or strength work. I lollygag on the weekends, what can I say, it’s a talent.

Before heading out the door to work, I enjoyed half of a juicy grapefruit and a chocolate cookies & cream protein shake. I had to mix it up this morning since I ran out of the protein I was using before, but damn, that shake was so satisfying!

I didn’t have time to snap a picture but into the shake went:

  • 8 oz almond milk
  • ½ scoop each of chocolate protein and cookies & cream protein
  • Handful of ice cubes
  • 3 frozen banana slices

2 hours later I had a more substantial 2nd half of my breakfast and enjoyed a Chobani power bowl which included Mango Chobani and ½ TBSP each of: flax seed, raw oatmeal and chia seeds.

Delish!

I have about half a day left of work before I have my 2nd training session with Heather, my personal trainer!

And a special Happy Birthday to my mom and an extra special Happy Anniversary to parents!

Happy Election Day…Running to Vote!

Last night I didn’t end up getting home until after 12:30, so I had planned accordingly with my boss prior and decided that I’d come in several hours late so that I could get some sleep and also vote. No way in heavens was I going to stand in the long voting lines at 5:30 tonight.

I hope you guys have voted or plan to later in the day. It’s your RIGHT and you should take advantage of that. That being said, after sleeping until 7:30, I laced up my sneakers and got ready for my run.

Our polls are located at the middle school, which is connected to my neighborhood by a bike path. My original plan was to run outside and near the end of my run, take the bike path to the middle school. I figured I could kill 2 birds with one stone. Workout and voting completed together.

I warmed up with a 2.5 mile run on my treadmill before layering up with my Nike Dri-Fit long sleeve shirt.

I should have rethought my outfit. My little legs were freezing, my fingers claimed victim to frostbite, and my ears were burning red. Okay, so there was no frostbite, but it would have been wise to look at the weather forecast BEFORE I went running and not after.

Every few steps I was sniffing snot and realized that by the time I made it to the polls, I’d probably have to stand outside in my inadequate clothing. At that point, I ran home and completed a 1.6 mile run, bringing my total to 4.1. A straight shot from my house to the school, via the path, would have been about 1 mile, and I wish I had sucked it up because in my town there were barely any lines!

After doing a little core work, I showered and downed a chocolate peanut butter banana protein shake before I packed up my work bag and headed to vote. I was in and out within 30 minutes! Lines my ass!

Originally I wanted dippy eggs and toast for breakfast, but because of my little running miscalculation, I was low on time so had to enjoy the above smoothie. Instead, my prepared breakfast was enjoyed as my lunch. Mixing it up a bit with those oats. 😉

And you guys thought I could go a day without oats. That’s almost as silly as me going a day without peanut butter!

Got my vote in, workout done and oats consumed. It’s gonna be a good day.

GO VOTE!!

Stomach Ache but Hungry. What’s a Girl to Do?!

My shake held me over until about 11 before I attacked my juicy Fuji apple. Halfway through I considered pulling out an almond butter packet I have in my purse but opted against it. Yes, I am VERY crazy.

About an hour later I snacked on Yoplait’s Greek yogurt that Chelsey introduced me to last weekend. She gave me a black cherry to try which I absolutely loved, but the vanilla flavor was too soupy for a greek yogurt and just didn’t do it for me. I stirred in a little of my chocolate peanut butter protein powder, but it was still just ehh.

For 2 Weight Watcher’s points, I’d much rather have my Fage 2% plain Greek yogurt. Now that shit is the bees knees.

About an hour later I hit the gym where I enjoyed a cardio focused workout. The other day I asked a trainer at the gym if I was allowed to spin when classes weren’t schedule and he gave me the green light which I’m excited about. It’s so hard to find a spinning class that I like and can fit into my schedule so it’s nice to know that I can get in some type of spinning in if I’m unable to make a class. I realize I won’t spin for as long or as hard but it’s better than nothing!

Afternoon Workout

  • 1.7 mile run
  • 10 minutes spinning
  • 5 minutes rowing
  • Stretching

I actually kicked major ass during my 10 minute spinning sesh. I worked myself hard and told myself that my lunch time workouts are so precious since I’m limited on time that if I was going to spin, then I was TRULY going to spin the real way. I did bursts in and out of position 2 and 3, had heavy resistance a majority of the time and got great intervals in. Overall I’m very pleased with my workout.

After the gym I was pretty hungry so I snacked on a Kashi Honey Almond Flax bar that I snagged last weekend from Ryan and Chelsey’s pantry, and also noshed on a bag full of sugar snap peas and home-grown cherry tomatoes.

I LOVE Kashi’s bars, some of my favorites being the Trail Mix and the Peanut Butter bars. They’re so good and a lot healthier than other versions of trail mix bars you’ll find on the shelves these days.

This was supposed to be a light snack to get a little protein in me before I had my 2nd protein shake of the day but honestly, my stomach has been hurting me for a good chunk of the day. My stomach says no, but my head says yes. And when I say head, I mean I get light headed when I’m hungry. What’s a girl to do. I think it’s the shake that’s turning my stomach. So it’s either finish the remaining half of my shake and make my stomach feel worse, or deal with light-headedness. I think I can manage another 20 minutes before heading home for the weekend.

In fun news, I’m going back to the driving range with my bestie, Allie, yes we have the same name, and then she’s coming over for dinner. I’m so excited to spend time with her again. She works 2 jobs, so in between our schedules, meetings and everything else under the sun, it can be quite hard to find a night that works for both of us.

Hope you all have a great rest of your Friday! Happy almost weekend!

Hodgepodge Cardio Workout

This afternoon I finally got my appetite back and wasn’t feeling so sick anymore, which showed in both my workout and the amount of food I inhaled.

Here’s a gist of what I ate between 12:30 and 3:00.

Mid-day Fuel

Anyone else eat an apple oddly like me and carve out the center before attacking the edges?

I left my lunch at home today so I’m lucky I packed the protein shake. I had that feeling that I didn’t grab something from the fridge; my bag was too light. Oh well, looks like the chicken and sweet potatoes will be dinner.

This afternoon’s workout was awesome and full of heart-raising exercises. The rowing machine was repaired after a solid 2 weeks of being out of commission so I was eager to strap myself in and go to town. My asthma kicked in after 10 seconds (fail. wuss. pathetic), but I stuck it out for 5 minutes. My arms were about to fall off.

Afternoon Workout

  • 1.5 mile run
  • 5 minutes rowing machine, blister included
  • 2 sets of 25 medicine ball sit-ups
  • 20 side-to-side medicine ball sit-ups
  • Stretching
  • 10 minutes nordic trainer

Feeling alive and ready to tackle the world!

This evening I’m planning on skipping spinning, as I’m exhausted and would like my body to recover so I can survive tomorrow night’s Kip Moore concert.  I’m planning on working on my training packet for Herbalife, grabbing a protein smoothie and heading over to Mike’s to help him pack up.  Two thumbs down for my best friend moving to Boston. Luckily, he’ll be less than an hour away and in a GREAT place to visit!

My mind is wandering back to the smoothie.

Do I order:

  • Almond Joy
  • Apple Pie
  • Butterfinger
  • Chocolate Chunky Monkey

I’m thinking of grabbing two; one for tonight and one for tomorrow’s breakfast. Leading towards at least getting Butterfinger!

Mmmmm Butterfingers 🙂

Never heard of VI Shape Shake mix but I’ll have to try this rendition on my own. Sadly, the Butterfinger shake I’ll order tonight won’t have the butterfinger pieces in it like the above shake. Being healthy sucks is awesome!

Wild Weekend

This weekend was a wild one, as my cousin and I raged with her Bubchi up at her beach house.

First, let’s skip to Friday night. My boss let the marketing girls leave early on Friday, which thrilled me since Ryan and Chelsey were waiting at home. Once home, the three of us hung outside talking about life, work and everything in between while Ryan hit golf balls around the yard and came an inch within hitting me in the face. Thanks bro, love you too!

Ryan, who works for Hershey chocolate, brought home dark chocolate covered acai berries and goji raspberries, to give us a taste of a new brand Hershey just acquired. I’ve always wanted to try both goji and acai berries, so I was hyperventilating when I saw the two bags sitting on the counter.

These bags didn’t last too long

I wasn’t even hungry but dug right in. Definitely spoiled dinner, but it was well worth it. That night, we hung out with my parents, watched a little TV, per my request we watched AC360 so I could fulfill my addiction to the Empire State Building shooting and Jeffrey Johnson. What an awful, awful tragedy, for the victims and for Jeffrey for having to feel the way he did for so long. Most people only feel bad for the victims, but how about a little compassion for Johnson. Yes, I know he went crazy and murdered a man, but can you imagine the thoughts and feelings he had to suffer through? I’m a big CSI fanatic, so cases like this draw me in. I spent a majority of the weekend on my phone just to try to find out the latest information.

Saturday morning I couldn’t sleep, and I was wide awake by 6:30 am… yes on a Saturday, ughhh! I decided to lace up my running shoes and went for a great 4.15 mile run before showering and getting ready to head up to my cousins. Around 10, my cousin, Nikki, my Aunt Mare, and myself drove to a protein shake bar in their city that is recently new. Since I didn’t realize how nutritious the smoothies were, I had a shake on my way to their house, but stole a few sips of their shakes and fell in love! I’m actually heading there tomorrow night to meet with one of the owners to talk about their business plan and discuss how I can get into the franchise and options I have, as they are looking to expand closer to my area. I’m so excited!

After spending about an hour longer than we expected at the shake bar, we dropped Aunt Mare off and headed up to York Beach, Maine, where we were heading to take care of Nikki’s Bubchi, who is old and needs as much help as she can get. Usually Nikki’s Aunt’s, Uncles and parents are at the beach on the weekend, but no one was able to head up. Nikki’s family dog, Kayla, a 13 year old Golden, had a stroke early this week and is house bound, so her parents had to stay home. Our family sticks together through thick and thin, so when Nikki asked me if I’d go up with her, I knew I couldn’t turn it down.

Once we arrived, we spent a little time with the Bubs and then wandered down to the beach to read and get a little sun.

The road we walk down to get to the beach ❤

After burning the soles of my feet, and crawling back to the house, we showered and went out for dinner. Nikki ordered a hell of a seafood meal, including a salad, chowder, lobster, mussels and fries, while I ordered a salad with grilled chicken and the Bubs ordered breaded baked cod.

Just a PART of our dinner

We were all satisfied and nearly in a coma by the time we made it home for the end of the Red Sox game. By 9:45 Nikki and I were in bed and fast asleep. What losers!

Sunday morning we woke up and tried to drag our tired bodies out of bed for a run. We both went our separate ways on our run and by the time we got back to the house, the Bubs was with her daughter-in law, chatting it up, while Nikki stretched on the floor. Nikki ran for 2 and I went for 2.8, and felt like death. We showered, ate breakfast on the porch with the Bubs, and went to the beach for 2 hours with Nikki and Tricia (Nikki’s aunt).

Nikko at the end of our beach day

After eating lunch on the beach, we wandered back to the house to spend time for the Bubs on the deck.

Feels like Vermont up here

It took us a lot longer to leave, as we had to make sure Bubs was all set for the week, grabbed her bills, garbage and everything else we could do since no one will be back to help her until Wednesday.

I said I wanted to be on the road by 2, since I had things to do back in town, but we got a late start due to the chores we had to help with, and hit traffic on the back roads home and didn’t get back until 5:30 pm. Saturday morning I was struck with car sickness and was never able to shake the feeling all day yesterday, last night and all day today, so the car ride home was awful, and by the time I was home, I wanted to die.

Is it normal to have the car sickness feeling for over 36 hours? I haven’t had a fever, chills or anything so I really don’t think it’s the bug, plus I never get car sick, so I’m not sure what happened.

I’m exhausted and almost finished with laundry, and am SO excited to crawl into my bed tonight. It was a long and tiring weekend, but it felt so good to put others first and help those who need it.

Hope you all had a great weekend too… without getting car sick!
