My Goals for 2013. Gonna Be A Life Changing Year!

So far 2013 has left me with a weird taste in my mouth, but after talking with several of my closest friends and family, I’m truly excited for the new year.

On that note, I’ve decided that 2013 is about 4 things. These 4 things aren’t resolutions. They’re simply goals that I’d like to accomplish, or start to accomplish.

  • Family
  • Friends
  • My Health
  • Having Fun

The one thing 2013 will not be about is finding a guy or making dating a priority. If it happens, then thumbs up cool, but it’s one of the last priorities I have. After a tough dating year in 2012, I’d like to step away from dating for a bit and focus on people who will always have my back.

Since girl power is flowing through my veins, it’s time to finally share my 2013 goals!

Goals for 2013

  • Spend more quality time with my friends and family: I do this a lot already, but I want to do it even more and go more places with them.
  • Focus on eating as clean as possible: I eat clean for the majority of the day, but I would really love to eliminate more processed foods and boost my intake in veggies.
  • Eat more structured dinners: I typically eat my larger meals during breakfast and lunch, and by the time dinner comes around after a day at work, I’m not really in the mood to cook something large. I usually stick to a protein shake, oatmeal or a Quest Bar with PB on it, but wind up snacking after. My goal is to experiment with dinners and eating patterns, and stick with what works best.
  • Prep healthy meals: I’ve always been inspired by those that take several hours from their Sunday to prep meals for the week. Hopefully you’ll be seeing a lot of this on the blog in the future! Such a great way to always have healthy meals on hand when you’re in a pinch or too lazy to cook!
  • Travel: I have a lot of plans to travel this year to visit my friends from afar. Brian in Los Angeles, Viss & Kate in San Diego, and Betsy, Morgdizzle and Charlie in Iowa. Hopefully a little travel outside of the U.S too, but that might have to wait until 2014. I miss those friends dearly and they’re more important for me to see!
  • Tone up and shed fat: You’ve seen my workouts on here before, and with all the hard work I put in to working out, I definitely don’t have the body I’d love to have. Don’t get me wrong, I’m very comfortable in my body and love who I am, but I’d love to lose a little bit of body fat and see some abs!
  • Run more races and challenge myself: My goal is to run at least 3 5k’s and my very first 10K. For the past 2 years, I’ve always been interested in running in The Dempsey Challenge 10k, but have never been trained enough to run a 10k. This year I plan to start training early and fundraise early. Helllllo, if I raise enough I get to meet Patrick Dempsey!

Ooops, how’d he get in there?!

  • Meet Patrick Dempsey: See above. Duh
  • Don’t drool when I meet Patrick Dempsey: I’ll fail at this one, but worth a shot!
  • Try new things: Whether it’s related to food, activities or experiences, I want 2013 to be full of new, exciting and terrifying experiences. It’s all about getting out of your comfort zone!
  • Don’t take love or anyone for granted: I learned my lesson on this with Rob, and while it wasn’t the reason our love didn’t last, I know that had we both not taken each other or our love for granted, our future could have turned out a little differently.
  • Move out and get an apartment/condo: Either with Allie and Kris, or by myself. Time to grow up.
  • Watch this blog grow: I want to meet bloggers, attend conferences, reap the benefits of writing and blogging about fitness and eating clean, and hopefully watch my blog grow! I’m hoping it’ll be a great year for Running on Peanut Butter!

And most importantly, and one that doesn’t need any explaining,

My Body is Telling Me “More Veggies!”

Today was my first full day back at work since Thursday, December 20th! Thursday, Friday and Monday I took half days to spend time with my family and the prospect, so easing back into the work week after the holidays wasn’t too painful. Let me tell ya, I was seriously dreading a full day of work, more so because the holidays and vacation are over. Take out the tissues. 😦

I do have to admit that although it’s sad to say goodbye to the holiday spirit, I am beyond excited to get back into my daily routine of lunch time workouts and more structured meals. I’m beyond ecstatic that cookies and desserts won’t be popping out at every corner.

After having a difficult run yesterday, I was hoping it was a fluke and that this morning’s run would be easier and not as painful. While it wasn’t as bad, it still wasn’t my best, and I think I know why. My body felt lethargic and heavy, aka it was screaming for more veggie love.

Ever since our NYE dinner, I’ve been craving roasted veggies and grabbed ingredients during yesterday’s errand run to prepare tonight. To be honest, I was going to prepare them last night, but only had time to prep chicken breasts since I made seeing Mark a priority over roasting veggies. I had veggies in the freezer at work so I knew I could get away with preparing the veggies tonight.

Morning Workout

I mentioned I was excited to get back into my workout routine as I’ve realized during the last week and a half, my strength workouts have been seriously lacking! Today I told myself that I was going to complete the Pure Hell workout from last week’s training session, you know, the workout that almost made me puke.

I’m Calling BS on Those Numbers

After my 4 mile run, I tackled several of the core exercises so that I wouldn’t be pressed for time during my lunch workout.

  • 4 mile run
  • 3 sets of 15 stair push-ups
  • 2 sets of 10 burpees
  • 2 sets of 10 leg circles – clockwise and counterclockwise
  • 50 crunches
  • 2 sets of 50 bike crunches
  • Stretching

I’ve been so sad lately since I ran out of frozen strawberries, but worry no more, I grabbed a new bag yesterday and was finally able to drool over my Strawberry Banana Protein Shake again.

Seriously, after my first sip I was going crazy. You’d think Patrick Dempsey had just pinched my butt and kissed me passionately. That damn good! 😉

Before my lunch time workout, I snacked on an apple, roughly 12ish almonds and the Apple Cinnamon Chobani bowl that Ryan picked up but never ate.

I added ½ a tbsp. of chia seeds, raw oats and PB2 to the bowl and loved every bite of it! I typically have several snacks in between my breakfast and workout, and save my lunch for after, although now that I mostly do strength training on my lunch hours, I could get away with having lunch beforehand since cardio isn’t involved as much.

Lunch Time Workout

Prior to tackling the Pure Hell Total Body workout, I busted out a quick mile on the treadmill before heading into the vacant class room to complete my strength workout.

  • Jump Overs Pulsing Squats, 2 sets of (8-6-4-2-1)
  • Squat Jump to Shoulder Press 12.5 lbs, 2 sets of 15
  • Summo Squat to Upright Row with 25 lbs plate, 2 sets of 15
  • Back Row on Bench, 15 lbs, 2 sets of 15
  • Reverse Back Flys on DB Bench, 5 lbs, 2 sets of 15
  • Step-Ups, 10 lbs, 2 sets of 15 each leg
  • Isolated Back Lunge on Steps 2 sets of 20 each leg
  • Sit-Ups on Bench, Arms Extended Up, 5 lbs, 2 sets of 10
  • Reverse Crunches, 2 sets of 20

The workout wasn’t as vigorous and puke worthy as it was with Heather, but I left a sweaty beast and felt strong.

I was more than ready for lunch by the time I cleaned up, and I enjoyed an Amy’s All-American Veggie Burger with Green Giant Garden Vegetable Medley.

I’ve been addicted to Amy’s Veggie Burger’s lately, especially when loaded with ketchup and mustard! I’m really only a sweet potato fan so I left roughly 60% of the potatoes and focused on the sugar snap peas.

Last night before heading to Mark’s apartment for a lazy night in, I cooked up 2 abnormally large chicken breasts on the stove top.

I also roasted a mix of carrots, broccoli and cauliflower in a mix of olive oil, salt and pepper, and had planned on enjoying a clean and healthy dinner of chicken and roasted veggies.

I really haven’t had too much of an appetite since lunch, so I snacked on several leftover baby carrots and a little pb, one of my favorite ways to eat peanut butter!

Exhaustion is kicking in so it looks like it’s time for me to curl up with a book and read the night away! Hope everyone survived being back at work!

Sexiest Man Alive and a Broccoli Overload

Mark this as VERY IMPORTANT:

People Magazine announced the Sexiest Man Alive late this morning and I am not pleased.

Okay, fine. Channing Tatum does look MARVELOUS in that beater, and tweed pants and freckled shoulders ensemble he’s rocking. I’ll give him that. I like Channing when he’s trim, but beefy Channing is not a sexy Channing. Sure, sure he stole my heart in The Vow, well by the end of the movie he did, but, Sexiest Man Alive? Nope. Not even close.

Oh hey, baby. Now THAT’S more like it. Gimme a piece of McDreamy! 😉 Sexiest Man Alive right there ladies and gentlemen. Don’t argue, you won’t win.

In all seriousness, who do you think should have taken the Sexiest Man Alive title?

Ever year I petition for Patrick Dempsey and every year I lose. That’s okay, he holds the title in my heart. Seriously though, hands off, he’s mine.

Last night my appetite magically disappeared. By disappeared, I mean that after work, dinner consisted of a handful of Special K crackers and 1 White Choco-Chip Butternut Square. Yes, only 1. That’s all I ate from 5:30 pm until 10:30 am. No rumbling belly, no junk food craving. A spoonful of peanut butter wasn’t even appealing to me.

I typically get cravings for an entire jar of peanut butter when I’m full and still go after it anyways because I’m a fatty I treat myself. 😉

Woke up once during the middle of the night, had to go downstairs for something, walked by the kitchen and cabinets and the plate full of squares, and didn’t even have the slightest craving for anything.

The world MUST be ending. I’m telling you there are some weird things going on!

My workout was kick ass and I loved the burn I got from my core workout. That was easily the All-Star of today’s workout.

Wednesday’s Workout

  • 5 mile run
  • 4 sets of 15 stair push-ups
  • 1 minute plank and 30 second side plank holds
  • 2 sets of 20 mountain climbers
  • 2 sets of 50 heel touchers
  • 50  vertical toe touches
  • 150 crunches: 50 regular, left and right
  • 100’s Abs
  • 20 minutes interval on vertical elliptical
  • Stretching

I call this one my 50’s workout. 🙂

Kip even helped me with my stretching and foam rolling. That boy does NOT look amused. That or he’s just sad that he knows I’ll be leaving for work soon. 😦

Breakfast included a little twist on my usual Raspberry Mango Overnight Oats. This morning, I opened my snack drawer to see if I could throw more in the bowl and was pleased when my PB2 and flax-seed were looking right at me.

OH. MY. GOODNESS. This was pure heaven in my mouth. I wasn’t even that hungry but I still demolished this sucker in minutes. I just love my Chobani powerbowls!

After my afternoon workout, I still wasn’t hungry at all, but I knew that I had to eat something otherwise my workout would have been a waste if I didn’t properly nourish it. I’ve been neglecting my vegetables lately (shush I know) so I redeemed myself and enjoyed a plate full of veggies and several turkey roll-ups.

3/4 of my plate is broccoli. Holy Moses, I’m gonna be seeing green later, and I don’t mean the dollar bills either!

Tonight after work I have to make a pit-stop at my favorite store ever, Target for glitter nail polish a few beauty essentials, and then I’ll be tearing it up with my man, Tony Horton!

Laters baby. 😉

Sweet Ending to my Sunday

After an afternoon of running errands, I hit the gym for an afternoon cardio session. I decided to do a decreasing interval workout.

Afternoon Workout

  • 20 minutes elliptical
  • 15 minutes arc trainer
  • 10 minutes stairs, 33 flights
  • 5 minutes cool down walk
  • Stretching

While I didn’t get any strength training in today like I had wanted, I was still able to leave the gym feeling like I accomplished a lot. The fact that I was dripping in sweat says something too.

After the gym I enjoyed a bowl of overnight oats which consisted of orange marmalade, blueberries, raspberries and silvered almonds for taste.

The orange marmalade was a tad overpowering and I could only stomach roughly half of the oats before it became too much for me to handle.

Lisha texted me the easiest recipe this morning for pumpkin muffins. I’m all about the two-ingredient recipes today! A box of spice mix and a can of pumpkin, bake it at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes and you have low-calorie and low-fat pumpkin muffins.

I was craving a chocolate pumpkin muffin so I cut up a Bliss Chocolate piece and sprinkled it on top. I wish I had chocolate chips to put in all of the muffins. Next time!

Now I’m just relaxing and watching one of my favorite movies, Sweet Home Alabama. It’s actually funny, because I always root for Josh Lucas in this movie, and at the time this movie came out, I HATED Patrick Dempsey in it. Now, Patrick is my favorite actor, and while I find him more tolerable in the movie (since I’m obsessed with him) than when it first came out, I’m still Team Josh. Foreva!

Alright, time to head up to bed and drool over Josh and Patrick. PERFECT ending to my Sunday.

A Case of the Mondays on Tuesday

I think my clock is off today, and by that, I’m referring to the fact that my body is under the assumption that today is Monday. Remember how yesterday I commented how my Monday was off to a great start? It’s a known fact that Mondays are quite terrible. Usually everyone is still recovering from the weekend, they feel sluggish and tired and their pants might be a little too snug.

Welcome to my Tuesday! The day of the week where you wake up feeling lethargic with brick legs and fat pants that make you feel fat. Did the stretch vanish from my pants over night, or did I eat an entire tub of peanut butter? Possibly both. Oh wait, that’s not your Tuesday? You’re saying it’s only me who’s having a case of the Mondays on Tuesday?

Instead of wallowing in self-pity and staying miserable for the remainder of my day, I decided to take a few minutes to make a short list of things that I am thankful for.

  1. My friends and family for supporting every decision I’ve ever made or considered (yes, even the crazy ones!)
  2. My body for carrying me through workouts I deem impossible to finish
  3. My health – no brainer!
  4. My education for burning the fire to always continue learning and in assisting me in getting a great marketing job
  5. My previous boyfriends for showing me what is and isn’t acceptable in relationships
  6. Food on the table and a roof over my head
  7. My kitty and puppy, even though he ate my car key this morning!
  8. Patrick Dempsey and Justin Theroux – hellllllo eye candy!

While my list doesn’t even come close to touching upon every little thing I am forever thankful for, it boosted my mood and made me forget that my pants were a little snug today or that my body is barely getting me through the day. The feeling will pass, and there’s no reason why I can’t feel great about my body, health and life amidst having a case of the Mondays.

So take a minute, whether you’re having a great day or down in the dumps, and make a list of things that make you happy or that you’re thankful for, and remember that it could be a lot worse.

Enough of the spiritual and preaching talk. Let’s jump back to yesterday afternoon’s spin class with Eve. Song 1, I was ready to die. Recall “Things I’m Thankful For” #2. I hail marry’d the shit out of that one during the 50 minute class. My body was still recovering from all the walking around New York this past weekend, and my legs sure did take a beating. I powered through it, even though I knew it wasn’t my best performance, I gave it the best that my body would allow.

Maybe I jumped into the class a few days earlier than I should, because upon waking, my thighs were burning and extremely tight. After snoozing for 5 minutes (totally necessary today), I put on my big girl running pants and crawled ran for 3.15 miles. Given how I felt, I’ll take it. I just kept picturing this everyone I wanted to quit.

Whatever you say baby!!

I victory danced my 3.15 run and celebrated with a lot of stretching. Hey strength exercises, screw you, you’ll get your loving later.

Morning Workout

  • 3.15 mile run
  • stretching
  • 2 sets of 20 mountain climbers
  • 1 minute plank
  • 2 sets of 13 standing dumbbell side crunches
  • 2 sets of 13 dumbbell rows

Okay, so I did 1 strength exercise, and I think it was only so I didn’t have to do jumping jacks. Lazy ass alert.
