Post Shoveling Soreness

I’m not sure what was going through my mind when I decided to shovel part of my neighbor’s driveway yesterday, but today I’m completely hating myself for doing a good deed. My lower back is on fiahhhh! Actually, my entire body is hurting, and I probably could have gotten away with not doing a strength workout prior to the shoveling, but oh well!

In the past week, I’ve only worked 2 half days, so waking up to an alarm this morning was extremely confusing. I forgot how many times I typically hit snooze and I ended up with roughly 5 minutes less time to workout. It might not seem like a lot, but it was the difference between my typical 4 mile runs and the 3.6 I had time for this morning.

Morning Workout

• 3.6 mile run
• 4 sets of 15 stair push-ups
• 50 heel touchers
• 50 crunches
• 1 minute plank hold and 30 second holds on both sides
• 2 sets of leg circles – 10 clockwise and 10 counterclockwise
• 25 bicycle crunches each side (total 50)
• Stretching

20121231-110622.jpg
I wanted to break free of my core workout rut, and included several of the new moves Heather threw my way last week. The leg circles are a killer and highly recommended!!

Breakfast

I’m still out of frozen strawberries and the grocery store didn’t have any in stock yesterday, so I had to play around with the frozen fruit I had on hand. I enjoyed a protein shake with vanilla protein powder, almond milk, ½ frozen banana, 3 frozen peach slices and a spoonful of PB2 since it was a little bland.

I didn’t finished it since it wasn’t the best, but I did enjoy a Chobani Strawberry Banana yogurt bowl several hours later at work with PB2, chia seeds and oats. SO GOOD!

This week is another relatively easy week since I have tomorrow off for the holiday, but I’m looking forward to my weeks going back to normal. Last week I felt like I didn’t complete a training workout in its entirety. With all the running around, dates, and family time, I realized that my strength workouts were bits and pieces of previous training workouts. It’s not a bad thing, but I’m excited for more structured strength workouts!

I completely failed with my veggie intake yesterday, but today is jam packed with the good stuff. I have 3 servings of veggies for today’s work day, and tonight Mark and I are going to be making dinner together. The menu includes pork loin (I accidentally typed lion first… pork lion, yum!) and veggies.

Since my gym closes at 2 today, I’ll be taking an early lunch to swing by for a light session of some form of exercise before date night begins with Mark!

We debated going out for dinner and then relaxing at his place after, but knowing how busy restaurants would be, we didn’t feel like having dinner at 4:30 or 9:00 pm, so we’ll be ringing in the New Year with our first home cooked meal together and movies all night. Talk about the perfect night in! J

Do you have any fun New Year’s Eve plans? Do you typically like staying in or going out?

I’ve never done the bar scene for NYE and really never want to, and last year I went to several house parties with friends, but staying in with loved ones is more my scene. I’m such a homebody!

Date Night & Chobani Addiction

If my body was hurting yesterday, then this morning is death for my body. Along with being tired, my body is seriously feeling Heather’s almost-puke workout from Thursday.

Yesterday I was able to enjoy another half relaxing day. After leaving work at 1 for a half day, I went to the gym for a light cardio workout which included 25 minutes on the elliptical and a 1-mile speed walk, and then the best part, 25 minutes in the sauna. Talk about relaxing.

My night got even better as Mark the Prospect and I celebrated him being a smarty pants and passing the CBIM test, aka the Certified Business Intelligence Professional test. We had planned on going on out to eat, but we were so tired and comfy on the couch watching a movie that we just decided to stay in. I didn’t mind at all. It was cold and windy outside, and I really didn’t want to go out to eat again.

532051_729468232973_917704017_n

The Prospect requested a picture of us and I was happy to oblige, even if it did turn out dark and blurry. Damn that earring earned the center of attention in the picture!

I got home around 11:30 and was out cold, before waking this morning around 9 am. I could have stayed in bed a lot longer but I have several things I want to get done before we head to my Mom’s brother’s house for Christmas with her family.

I do plan on getting some type of workout in this morning, but I’ll have to see what my body tells me it’s okay with. I just finished up my newest addiction, thanks to Lisha. Vanilla greek yogurt mixed with peanut butter, holy heavens is this baby good.

photo-20

I one uped her and went for Chobani Vanilla Chocolate Chunk.

photo-21

Mixed with Teddie’s Peanut Butter and this baby is a slam dunk and perfect for pre-workout fuel.

Alright, time to go tackle my to-do list before heading to my Uncle’s. Luckily the desserts there rarely tempt me. I’m tackling this holiday party with a clean-eating mind!

And before I sign out, a seriously special shout-out to my girls that left comments on yesterday’s post and encourage me to not give up and beat myself up for my holiday weight gain. You girls and all of my readers mean the world to me. So thankful for you guys every single day! xo

I Forgot We Have a Basketball Hoop

How has everyone’s Wednesday started off? Mine was off to a good start thanks to a sweaty workout powered by my Polar watch. Seriously addicted to this baby. I completed a 4 mile run, with 4 sets of 15 stair push-ups completed in between each mile. Since this afternoon’s strength workout requires burpees, I snuck them in after my run since those should seriously never be done in front of anyone else. 😉

20121219-111440.jpg
I also included a bit of core work, but since my core is still extremely sore from Monday’s workout, I didn’t go too crazy. 657 calories in 68 minutes, I’ll take it!!

Morning Workout

• 4 mile run
• 4 sets of 15 stair push-ups
• 2 sets of 10 burpees
• 1 minute plank hold
• 50 crunches
• 2 sets of 20 mountain climbers
• 50 heel touchers
• 50 scissors
• Stretching

I managed to enjoy half of a chocolate peanut butter protein shake before realizing I was running late for work.

This is where my “good” morning turned ugly. I didn’t have my normal parking spot in the garage last night, instead, I had to park to the right, along the edge of the driveway. This morning I told the ol’ man not to hit my car when he left for work since it was in a weird spot. Well, as a creature of habit, I completely forgot I wasn’t in the garage and backed out like I normally do.

20121219-111637.jpg
Needless to say I forgot we have a basketball hoop. Not how I wanted my morning to go down, but in light of the crappyness of backing into your hoop, I’m grateful that it didn’t fall on top of my car, as my Dad pointed out.

I’m really torn with what to do, especially since I JUST replaced that part of my car this past April from a hit and run. The idea of shelling out possibly $500 to fix this is breaking my heart and causing so much stress.

20121219-111718.jpg
I could really use my stress relievers right about now! Until then, I decided to enjoy a healthy food turned comfort food in the form of Chobani Strawberry yogurt with lots of PB2 mixed in, because PB&S reminds me of my childhood when the only troubles you had were waiting for your friend to stop hogging the marker you wanted to use.

Luckily I have half a day at work today which will help. I’m leaving at 2 and am heading straight to Gold’s for my upper body workout. I’m excited that I don’t have to be limited to my lunch hour and can stay longer and also use the sauna. Talk about total stress reliever right there! Then tonight my Mom and I have a hot date involving decorating Christmas cookies for the neighbors!

I might just have to include a little Christmas coloring too, since we know that’s how I love to relieve my stress.

Not sure if this is a positive or negative note to leave on, but hey, maybe since the world is ending on Friday I don’t have to worry about paying half a grand to repair my car. 😉

Peppermint Fro-Ro Date

Last night Lindsay and I met up for our bi-weeklyish “fro-yo for dinner” date. We emailed throughout the morning dreaming and talking about fro-ro.Catch that slip up? I actually typed that without looking and couldn’t stop laughing when I said it out loud, so for laughs, the typo is totally staying.

I mentioned that I was hoping they’d have several holiday themed flavors, especially peppermint, so I was thrilled when we walked in and they had Candy Cane yogurt! They also had Eggnog, but that just disgusted me, so I stuck with half Candy Cane and half California Tart. A winning combo! I was hoping for graham cracker toppings but had no luck, so I stuck with a few Oreo crumbles, and then played it safe with my fav, rainbow jimmies!

IMG_5226

After talking for about 20 minutes, we called it a wrap and each finished up our evenings full of laundry, cleaning, cooking and grocery shopping. We’re fun girls!

IMG_5229

I headed next door into the grocery store to pick up a grapefruit since I was so depressed without one yesterday morning, and an avocado for a little healthy fat to include in today and Friday’s meals.

After prepping food I hopped on the treadmill for a quick 1-mile walk while I read my new book, What Happens at Christmas, which unknowingly to me, is set in 1886. Total fail! Not the type of romance I want in a book. I’m giving it a shot, who knows, maybe I’ll like it. In fact, yesterday Jaime and I were just discussing books and how she’s reading a classic, East of Eden. I mentioned I wanted to read a classic too, and I know this one isn’t necessarily a classic, but I should get a little credit since it takes place so damn long ago!

Thursday

IMG_5233

This morning I enjoyed THE juiciest grapefruit, along with a peanut butter protein shake, and enjoyed a clean egg scramble later in the morning. Into my scramble went 1 egg and 2 egg whites, half of an avocado, a handful of spinach, and a spoonful of pineapple salsa.

IMG_5234

This scramble was so good and the addition of pineapple salsa really added a nice touch. Yum!

Morning Workout

  • 4.1 mile run
  • 3 sets of 15 stair push-ups
  • 1 minute plank hold
  • 50 heel touchers
  • 50 scissors
  • 50 crunches and 50 side-to- side crunches
  • 30 toe touches
  • Stretching

Not a bad morning workout, although my legs started to feel a little heavy at times, but it might just be overuse.

This afternoon I have a fun workout full of Smith Machine squats, lunges, and arm work. I’m continuing on my goal to eat as clean as possible today. I do so well during the day, but after dinner, all hell breaks loose. I think I might have to save my Chobani bowls for a nighttime dessert.

Do you guys have any tips on eating healthy at night or healthy treats you enjoy after dinner?

This girl needs help!

Killer Workout and Killer Healthy Muffin

Last night my Aunt Judy, who hosts Christmas every year, sent out an email with what each family/individual brought to the feast and also highlighted special guests and fun activities we enjoyed. With the Christmas list generated, I am anxiously reading through blogs and browsing Pinterest in hopes of finding a delicious and creative dessert to bring. So that’s what my day has basically been comprised of. Oh and work too, but less of that and more of dessert browsing. Priorities people. 😉

Today’s awesomeness has been, well, purely awesome. Not only did I get a great workout in today, but I also have enjoyed quite a few yummy meals.

Before we get to the fun food, let’s talk about workouts.

Last Night’s Personal Training

Last night Heather put me through a bitching workout. In between dripping pounds of sweat on the gym floor and guzzling water, I made sure she knew how crazy she was. Just look at her nasty workout she put me through last night and tell me you wouldn’t be cursing her out too.

20121211-155743.jpg
The one thing I love about this workout is that I can easily do it at my home gym in my basement. We have several different bars from when my brother lifted weights at home so I’m happy to report that this one will be done in the comforts of my home and not in front of my coworker. Yup, my ass was a foot in front of my coworkers face while I did those stupid burpees and he did some type of core work. Talk about awkward!

Today’s Workout

• 5 mile run
• 1 minute plank hold
• 50 crunches
…followed by this sucker!

20121211-160043.jpg

My run was ridiculously easy, and by easy I mean I wasn’t huffing and puffing and swearing at my midg legs to keep me going. I’m not going to say anything so that I don’t jinx myself, but I might have blogged last week about my runs being more difficult due to the workouts from my trainer. Not sure what’s happening this week, but I love how toned my arms and back have become, and my legs are feeling much better as well. I’ll just blame the running improvements on my physical improvements.

FOOOOOOD

This morning, even though I was pressed for time and running late, I decided I wanted to switch up my meals for the day.

I started my morning off with half of a grapefruit. I just love tangy sweetness to kick off my mornings, with half of a mini cup of applesauce, the rest was used for lunch, and a protein shake to go. This time, I only made my shake with milk. No frozen naners, ice or spinach. Wah.

20121211-160148.jpg
I stayed true to my breakfast #2 of a Chobani strawberry power bowl, which included flax seed, chia seeds, raw oats and PB2. I CAN’T give that goodness up. Chobani will be included in my “last meal,” no doubt about that!

Lunch is where the big change came. I decided to leave my grilled chicken, sweet potatoes and cherry tomatoes for tomorrow and had the urge to try STUFT Mama’s Healthy Apple Microwave Muffin.

20121211-160321.jpg
This had to have been one of the easiest and healthiest recipes for a quick meal or snack. I followed the recipe exactly, aside from subbing cinnamon for the nutmeg, and microwaved the muffin for 5 minutes exactly. Perfect timing.

20121211-160422.jpg
I reheated it at work and topped it with the remnants of my PB2 and a tablespoon of Land o’ Lakes Cinnamon Sugar butter spread since I’ve been dying to try it for months and didn’t have enough PB2.

20121211-160549.jpg
Kristin you are a genius and I love you forever. If I still lived in California I’d sure as hell be having muffin mug dates with you pretty much every single day.

You guys HAVE to try this! I can’t wait to try Kristin’s other variations on the muffin. I’m thinking my next one will have to be a moist chocolately version as a little nighttime dessert.

Time for the Christmas movies!

Double Digits December

Happy double digits December!

10

I cannot believe that it is already December 10th. This month and year has flown by way too quickly. It seems like so much has happened so far this year:

Last night I cozied up by the fire with the tree in the background while I watched a holiday favorite, 12 Men of Christmas.

movie

If you love Josh Hopkins from Cougar Town and are a fan of yearly calendars with half-naked men, then you’ll love this one. Just watch it with your girls and not your man. 😉

Monday

This morning I woke up and had an amazing run, despite last night’s workout which was full of squats on the Smith Machine and elevated lunges.

Morning Workout

  • 3.8 mile run
  • 4 sets of 15 stair push-ups
  • 1 minute plank hold
  • 50 heel touchers
  • 30 toe touches
  • 2 sets of 20 mountain climbers
  • 30 second wall sit
  • 50 twisted crunches
  • Stretching

Breakfast

Breakfast was a feast. Seriously not sure where my appetite came from since I stuffed face last night during movie time, but my stomach required a lot of nourishment.

shake

Along with half of a grapefruit, I enjoyed a green mustache courtesy of the spinach in my chocolate protein shake.

muffins

Then I had one of my Momma’s mini Pumpkin muffins that she made yesterday, along with a Chobani Mango power bowl, which included chia seeds, flaxseeds and raw oats.

cho

My Mom actually told me I couldn’t take credit, buttttttt I will say that these are the EXACT same pumpkin muffins I made, except she went for the minis. Now she’s trying to steal my thunder! 😉

I also enjoyed an undocumented banana dipped into PB2 before enjoying grilled chicken and half of a baked sweet potato.

lunch

This afternoon I have personal training session #4 with Heather so I’ll be skipping my lunch time workout like I typically do on Mondays. I’m thinking it’s going to be a killer leg day, but that’s just my intuition speaking.

Alright, time to get back to work and get psyched for tonight’s workout! Hope everyone’s having a great Monday.

Happy Uncontrollable Appetite Friday

Happy Friday and also happy uncontrollable appetite day! Anyone else have this issue besides me? It seems that no matter how much I eat, my little stomach wants more. Thank goodness my nutritionist and trainer want me eating more. Crazy thing is, months and weeks ago the thought of eating more than 1,200 calories freaked me out. Now, after 3 weeks of training and an increase in calories, I’ve already lost 2 pounds and have toned up.

The lesson I’ve learned so far is to always listen to those who know what they’re talking about! 😉

Breakfast

IMG_5089

This morning’s breakfast was missing a little sweetness due to no grapefruits in my fridge, so I made due with a chocolate banana protein shake and a Chobani power bowl, which was much needed after my morning workout.

IMG_5092

Morning Workout

  • 3.5 mile run, .5 mile walk intervals
  • 3 sets of 15 stair push-ups
  • 1 minute plank hold
  • 50 heel touchers
  • 50 crunches
  • 50 scissors
  • Stretching

My day at work consisted of tackling this beast of a corner of filing cabinets.

IMG_5093

Most people would think it’s a dreaded task but I welcome any task that gets me moving around and not sitting at my desk. Plus, it time flies by, especially when you float into your coworkers offices to talk Christmas decorations and workouts.

After attacking the cabinets and filling an entire recycling bin with outdated proposals, I enjoyed half of a PB2 and banana sandwich and almonds before heading to the gym for my upper body workout.

IMG_5090

I started this workout with a 1 mile run before following this routine exactly pretty closely. I chose to do my burpee push-ups bicep curls to overhead press, in 2 sets of 10 instead of 15 for time constraints. A man was hogging the cables so when they opened up I made sure to complete both sets on that at once. I was hoping to get in an additional 10 minutes of cardio after the weights, but didn’t have time.

Lunch

IMG_5100

After showering at the office, I scarfed down an Amy’s All American Veggie Burger, which sort of looks like a turkey, with cherry tomatoes and ate part of a protein bar since I under packed on the food front today.

I just got home from work and dug into a greek salad from one of my favorite local restaurants, The Puritan.

photo-14

I was craving a peanut butter oatmeal bowl but somehow I knew veggies would be a smarter option!

Now it’s time to try and figure out how to transfer domains and play around with the backend of the blogging world before I watched Christmas movies and wrap gifts.

Hope everyone is having a relaxing or wild Friday night!

I Hate Burpees

As I sit here at my computer, the actual typing of this post is literally painful. Last night, after battling a case of hot flashes and the chills at work, Heather put me through a workout that made me want to cry. My arms were screaming bloody murder, and this morning, they’re screaming revenge on Heather.

Ow.

It was such a quick workout, but it definitely wasn’t easy. Once we got to the TRX area, the first words out of her mouth were, “burpee time.”

Bugh, seriously!

20121204-115358.jpg
I don’t hate burpees, but I don’t like them either. The only time I hate them is when I wear a loose shirt and people are around. Check and check.

Now I know I have abs of steel (I can dream!), but I hate the idea of being watched and critiqued by outsiders while my shirt is flip-flopping in the wind with my stomach in full view. It’s just not cute.

The burpee workout had me holding two 10-lb dumbbells. I’d place the dumbbells on the ground, hop back, do a push up, hop up, do a bicep curl to an overhead press. 15 bloody times.

We then headed to the cables to do 2 different chest/shoulder/back workouts which included crossing my arms in an X and hugging a tree. I left my paper in my car so that’s as technical as we’ll get. 😉

This was followed by 2 variations of TRX cable pull-ups, high and low, side planks with a lateral dumbbell raise with a hip dip, and finally jump squats into overhead presses.

This workout was repeated once but it was hated for the entire night.

When I got home, I was feeling a lot better than earlier in the day, and no longer suffered the hot and cold flashes. I enjoyed Thanksgiving #2 leftovers and then settled on the couch with a bag of pretzel sticks. I was seriously lacking in the carbs department and needed comfort food while I watched a Christmas movie.

**

I was out cold by 8:30 last night and slept like a rock, but with all that sleep, I still needed MORE. Don’t you just hate how long it can take for your body to recover from several hard and tiring days?

I contemplated taking a personal day, then quickly decided against it and gave my morning run a shot. It was a lot easier than I had anticipated, but I’ve noticed ever since I’ve started working with my personal trainer, that my runs have become more difficult. I realize it’s from the workouts Heather has been putting me through, but boy, my mornings are 10 times more difficult now!

Morning Workout

• 3.2 mile run
• 1 minute plank
• 50 heel touchers
• 50 crunches
• 30 toe touchers
• 100’s abs
• 2 sets of 13 standing dumbbell side crunches
• Stretching

20121204-115653.jpg
This is how we do planks in my house. Jake ALWAYS has to sit underneath my chest. I feel bad when I drip an incredible amount of sweat on him, but he never seems phased. He keeps me going. My little motivator for not crashing on him.

Breakfast

20121204-115837.jpg
Breakfast was once again half of a grapefruit and a chocolate protein shake before work and a Chobani pomegranate yogurt bowl several hours later at work.

I have my legs & arms workout scheduled for today, but my body is so sore that I’m contemplating either taking the day off completely or just doing light cardio for a little at the gym.

Tonight I’ll be heading to my cousin Lindze’s house to have dinner and spend the evening with her and her husband, Mike, so an evening workout isn’t doable.

I’ll have to decide quickly!

Best Friend Date & Thanksgiving Dinner #2

What a tiring past 24 hours!

Yesterday we left off with me relaxing for several minutes before I had to head to my neighbors to babysit my 3 favorite kiddos while their parents went out to celebrate their Dad’s birthday.

Bella, Markie and JJ were all doing their own thing, so I spent time playing and hanging out with each of them. Markie and I started out with watching some of his favorite shows, including Spongebob (okay I actually LOVE when he watches this, it’s SO good!), then I helped JJ brainstorm the book she’s working on to give to her former teacher.

Bella and I went into the basement to show each other workout exercises. Bella and I get along extremely well. She’s a former gymnast and a current track & field star, so it’s always fun to watch her show me her insanely disgusting flexibility moves. She even told me last night that she used to be able to take her glasses off with her feet. Ew!

IMG_4969

One of my favorite parts of being with the kids last night was watching them choose their advent calendars and then opening day #1. We actually had a debate over which number you open first. I always opened #1 first, and #24 on Christmas Eve, but they did the opposite. They always opened #24 first since they were “counting down.” That’s Bella on the right in the above picture trying to “Google” which way was correct. We gave up and called it a truce when Markie decided to open #24 and eat a chocolate. Problem solved. 😉

With an advent calendar, do you typically open box #1 or #24 first?

I didn’t end up getting home last night or this morning until 2 am. Mr. & Mrs. Messina sure did have a great time celebrating Mark’s birthday, but it was torture on me. By the time I got home and was ready for bed, it was 3 am!

I only slept until 9:15 this morning, which means today has been a painful and tiring day!

I enjoyed a bowl of Chobani yogurt with Chia seeds while watching last week’s Parks & Rec episode before I went for a 3.5 mile run.

After my run, I met my best friend Lisha halfway, about 45 minutes for each of us, for a lunch date at Panera. I hadn’t been feeling well all morning so I only ordered the chicken noodle soup bowl.

IMG_4976

$5.64 for that bowl of soup was a little outrageous, but I knew that my body needed the calories and protein so I forced myself to eat it. I pocketed that lil’ mini apple and plan to enjoy it tomorrow.

IMG_4979

After talking about our workouts, Christmas and men, we called it a day, took our annual picture and said our goodbyes. I knew that I had my “Total Body Workout” to do this evening, and I was completely dreading it. With being tired and the weather, it was the last thing I wanted to do, but I relaxed for half an hour when I got home and then trekked on over to the gym.

I’m SO glad that I went, because it was an awesome workout that left me schweaty and hungry. By the time I got home, my 2nd Thanksgiving dinner with my parents was ready.

IMG_4997

I’ll be completely honest with you guys when I say that I enjoyed 2 servings of stuffing and a LOT of crunchy skin. I never treat myself with the skin but it was there and I wanted it, so I ate some. All I can say is that I’m one stuffed turkey! 😉

Now it’s time to go find someone to rub my full belly and watch a Christmas movie and relax for the night. I hope you guys had a great weekend!
