Shopping, Bonfires and Friends

Yesterday was such a busy but fun day. I started off the afternoon with a little shopping fun with my best friend Lisha, who lives and works in Boston at Brigham & Women’s Hospital.

We met about halfway at the Merrimack Outlets and enjoyed catching up and shopping for cute new outfits. I didn’t end up buying anything, but we both came across this shirt at the Nike Outlet and both fell in love with it. Unfortunately since we both sweat so much when we workout, we prefer buying tanks and not shirts.

After several hours of shopping, we had to say goodbye, but we’re getting together with our other best friend from high school, Jenny and hopefully Jaime (I know you’re reading this so keep part of next weekend open)!

I freshened up when I got home and then headed over to my aunt and uncles for my cousin-in-laws 30th birthday party. My cousin Lindze, asked her husband Mike how he wanted to celebrate, and he said he just wanted all of his friends together for a BBQ and a night of drinking and hanging out. That’s my kind of man, simple and low-key! Lindze, however, always chooses dancing at a club for her birthday. So different but they are so perfect for each other.

Mike’s parents and brother Brian drove 4+ hours from Maine to celebrate with everyone, which was a very nice surprise. There was a lot of junk food, drinking and hours spent around the fire. While I didn’t have a drink besides my go-to water, I did enjoy a cookie and cupcake. I didn’t eat much earlier in the day so I didn’t feel bad about having a sweet or two.

Steph, Lindze’s best friend since high school, convinced my uncle to take a shot with her, while the birthday boy laughed and Janine accidentally photo bombed the picture. Hey, a girl just wanted to shine a little light on the party.

Janine is fun, funny and wild! She’s also a runner and always posts ridiculously delicious looking meals on Instragram (thepurplegirafeej9). It was nice to be able to talk with Janine about running, races and overcoming plateaus. She’s even trying to convince me to run the Renegade Playground next Saturday in lieu of Lindze, who cannot make it. It seems like so much fun but these types of races have always terrified me. I think it’s time to overcome some fears!

This morning I wasn’t feel too hot. Being sick and staying outside from 5 until midnight probably didn’t help, but sleeping in until 10 was much-needed. I ran a difficult 4 miles this morning, with “blow your nose” breaks every once in a while.

I nomed my way through this two-ingredient pancake that Tina from Carrot’s ‘n’ Cake is always blogging about. Holy crap was it amazing! Mash a banana with an egg and cook it like a pancake and you’ve got yourself a healthier version of the pancake. You’re welcome.

I’m about to run a few errands before hitting the gym for a vigorous workout. After that I think I see a couch and chick flicks with my name written all over it. Gotta love rainy, cold Fall days!

Reunion with the Best Friend: Shopping Style!

This morning I woke up to a wet cat crawling over my face and a dog breathing heavily near my ear. Even when there isn’t a phone alarm set, my house is never short of an “animal” alarm. I can’t figure out which was worse. A wet cat or a panting dog. I’m leaning towards wet cat, only since it was cold in my room.

I was able to lounge around in my sweats for a little bit before I called Apple support and got my iTunes fixed. Needless to say, I can FINALLY buy music again! You see, when you set up your iTunes with a college email address, and then 4 years later upon graduation they tell you it’s deactivated a year after graduating, you kind of get screwed when your “lost password” attempts get sent to an email you no longer have access to.

I really want to cruise down the streets blasting Bieber’s “As Long As You Love Me,” so I finally had the motivation to call Apple. Mission accomplished. Time to spend $$$$ on the Biebs!

After that success I hit up the gym for a shorter than planned gym session. I completed a 4 mile run and finished with 10 minutes of additional cardio before I started feeling sick and left. All along I felt like I was getting better this week but of course my cold really had to come back full force for the weekend.

I polished off half a batch of Raspberry Vanilla Overnight Oats in my favorite jar, and am now off to the Merrimack Outlets to do a little shopping with my best friend Lisha!

Hope your Saturday isn’t as rainy and cold as mine!

Rainy Day Won’t Get Me Down!

Last night’s little “feel bad for myself” episode is long over, thank the lord! Actually, it’s more like “thanks to my best friends Lindsay and Allie, my coworker Jen, and bloggers Alaine and Amanda. You girls gave me great encouragement and made me snap out of my “I’m done with love funk.”

My girls Allie and Lindsay are seriously ALWAYS there for me when I need them, and I cannot imagine living a life without them by my side. I love how all my relationships with my closest friends are so different but so fulfilling.

Allie and I take each other to York Beach in Maine or to Livingston Park and go for long walks to talk and clear our heads. Long drives are also one of our “things” we do when the other needs advice or a shoulder to lean on. It’s how we get each other through the hardships we face in life.

Lindsay and I have a slightly different approach to helping each other through bad days. We have two go-to choices. Numero uno is go to Shorty’s, get beer and feast on the free chips & salsa. BEST chips & salsa we’ve found. We  I typically go through 2 baskets of the greasy chips while we bitch about men and how they constantly fail us in relationships. Yup, it’s always the man’s fault.  Option two is to jam our break-up tunes which consist of Aly & AJ and Keri Hilson (a tradition we’ve held since being college roommates sophomore year), and also shopping, preferably at Marshall’s. Whoever said retail therapy was the cure for everything deserves a wet smooch from me, but only if he’s a sexy man.

Do you and your girlfriends have a go-to plan when one of you guys are hurting or having a rough day?

Needless to say, I didn’t get the best quality of sleep last night so when my alarm went off at 5:34, I had no problem snoozing twice. My run suffered from the lack of sleep, less time and difficulty breathing, so I was content when I managed to make it 3 miles before the clock struck “strength” time.

I actually didn’t do much strength, it more so consisted of me lying on the floor looking like I was murdered.

Morning Workout

  • 3 mile run
  • 15 stair push-ups
  • 50 crunches and 50 side-to-side crunches
  • 1 minute plank hold
  • Stretching

Breakfast was the highlight of my day, as I was FINALLY able to find chia seeds for overnight oats! I made the Raspberry Vanilla Overnight Oats from The Yummy Life, and boy were they yummy! Not only did the overnight oats keep me full for the first half of my day, but I also was able to eat half in the early morning and then the rest in the late morning. It was nice to not rush myself through a meal and enjoy it over several hours.

Do you guys enjoy overnight oats? If so, do you have a favorite recipe?

It’s been raining buckets and buckets of rain all day so I opted not to make the 3 minute walk to the gym on my lunch hour. I didn’t have a spare pair of shoes so I really wasn’t in the mood to workout in sopping shoes.

Have you guys tried this cottage cheese/fruit blend? Jen raved about it the other day so I picked a blueberry and apple cinnamon package up the other night. Sadly, I was disappointed in the blueberry. I think if I dipped the cottage cheese into the blueberries it would have been better, but by mixing the two, the taste of sweet blueberries wasn’t even noticeable. Talk about a complete fail!

My coworker Jen and I hit the gym after work and took a kickboxing class at 5:30. Before the class we had 10 minutes to kill so I ran a quick mile and chatted with her while she walked. We then hit the class, which started with 15 minutes of abs and then our kickboxing boot camp class started. The class was nonstop. Literally, nonstop. The instructor was an adorable little firecracker of an ex-Army man.

I ate a bunch of leftovers for dinner and am just about to put the season premiere of CSI:NY on.  Hope you all had a great Friday!

Does Heartbreak Ever Go Away?

I had a great afternoon and evening and then it got awful with the click of a laptop key. I wasn’t even going to do a post, I’m that distraught, but it has to be done. So while this post might read all cheery, at least the beginning, I’m really sitting here with a straight face, a broken heart and nothing in me.

Before I get all wah wah, I should start by mentioning that I had an orgy in my mouth today after my workout. That’s right, remember those pancakes I made last night? Yup, I demolished two of those suckas after my lunchtime workout.

So amazing. SO amazing! After a 2 mile run, 15 minutes on the mystery cardio machine and medicine ball lumberjack chops and squats, these were earned!

After work I went with my best friend Allie and Kris to watch Allie’s 7-year-old cousin Jaime, play in her soccer game. It was chilly out but so much fun spending time with her extended family!

Then after getting home, I was bored and putting off blogging so I went on Facebook and goofed off. I ended up on my ex’s page and lost it. A new chick, mind you she’s not cute at all, posted shirtless pictures of him, followed up with a picture saying they loved each other, back from August. Give the fact that we broke up in July. Ugh. That one hurt. Badly. Deeply. Rob was what I thought my one true love, the man I planned to get a house with this winter and eventually marry. Maybe I’m just hurting because he moved on before I did. All I know right now is devastation. On the positive side of this, I no longer have an appetite which means no midnight snacking for me!

Luckily I have the season premiere of Grey’s Anatomy in 20 minutes. Hopefully Patrick Dempsey can cheer me up a little.

Needed: A Handsome Man to Bring Me Chicken Noodle Soup

My throat is more sore and my ass is sore and I had a midnight snack last night and there are so many ands in this sentence that my college English professor would cringe at, but I’m sick and everything gets thrown out the window and I’m allowed to write run-on sentences if I want to.

Sadly that’s not how it works. Bad days, sick days, kick ass days. It doesn’t matter what kind of day you have, there’s no excuse to stray from your healthy and smart ways. I could sit here and kick myself for snacking in the middle of the night (I won’t tell you that I demolished some peanut butter), but at this moment it’s a new hour and a new day and nowhere to look but forward.

I took it easy on my morning run since I’m a little under the weather and didn’t want to overdue it. I ran 3 miles and followed up with weights while jamming out to my Justin Bieber Pandora station. Seriously guys, you can make fun of me all you want but his station really pumps me up for workouts!

Morning Workout
* 3 mile run
* 1 minute plank hold
* 15 stair push-ups
* 2 sets 20 of mountain climbers and 1 set rock climbers
* 2 sets of 13 skiing dumbbell squats and 1 set of 13 squats with overhead dumbbell press
* 100 imaginary jump ropes

Side note dudes and dudettes. If this post looks “off” or not formatted, it’s because I’m blogging from my phone and we all know I hate writing lengthy things on this mofo. As a member of the grammar police, typos bug the shit out of me so if I have any, please ignore . I have absolutely no idea how to check my grammar on this sucker. 🙂

What I could really use is a cute boyfriend or just any delicious man to bring me a hot bowl of chicken noodle soup and crackers and then massage my shoulders and head.

So if you want to lend me your hunky boyfriend or know of any single men, send them my way… just make sure they bring me soup!

The Circus is in Town!

Wow, talk about a wild Wednesday, but before I even begin to get to the best parts, let me recap my afternoon workout. One word: tough! Yesterday’s R.I.P.P.E.D class caught up with my quickly, resulting in a struggle of a 1.5 mile run, sending my total mileage to 5 miles.

I contemplated hitting the stair master or the elliptical, but didn’t want to overwork my midget sore legs too much, so I hit the spinning room for a quick and tough 15 minute ride. I dripped more sweat in my personal 15 minute spin workout than I have in a 45 minute instructed spin class. Looks like there’s a new instructor in town suckas!

No core or strength workouts this afternoon, mainly because I was tight on time and already did my arms yesterday.

My stomach was a rumbling during my ride and wolfed down my leftover honey bbq grilled chicken and steamed carrots after showering up.

I work in an old mill building that has active trail tracks in between our building and where we have to park/Gold’s Gym. 5 minutes before leaving work, we heard the train crossing beep whatever the hell that’s called. Jen then yelled, “the circus is in town!”

Ha ha ha, she thinks she’s funny.

Guess what? The circus is in town. No, really, it is, and the trains carrying the animals stopped RIGHT in front of our path to get to our cars. Seriously!

The arena that puts on the show is several blocks down the road and apparently every year the trains block everyone in our buildings in, causing us to have to walk down the road, cross the street, and then walk back up the road to our cars. It’s basically one LONG ass walking U-turn.

Earlier today I was really craving those pumpkin pancakes, but after work I had absolutely zero appetite so I decided to run errands instead. An hour and a half and I couldn’t find Chia Seeds or Laughing Cow Cinnamon Cream Cheese Spread. I struck out completely! 😦 2 grocery stores failed me, but at least I have one last option tomorrow.

Do you guys have to go to multiple grocery stores to buy all your essentials?

When I got home, I whipped up breakfast for lunch tomorrow. Confuse you? I’m loving the breakfast foods for all meals lately. 🙂

Since I used all of the cottage cheese, I couldn’t make the Pumpkin Protein Pancakes, so I made the Banana-Oatmeal Pancakes in the latest issue of Fitness Magazine.

Banana-Oatmeal Pancakes (Fitness Magazine)

  • 1 1/2 cups soy milk
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 2 bananas, chopped
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp plus 1 tsp baking powder

  1. In a blender, puree soy milk and oats until smooth. Add bananas, flour, 1/2 tsp kosher salt, and baking powder and puree a few seconds more. Let batter rest 10 minutes.
  2. Heat a large nonstick saute pan over medium heat and cook pancakes to your desired consistency.
  3. Top with sliced bananas and maple syrup or toppings of your choice.

These make 8 pancakes, but I decided to cut the recipe in half and came out with 4 pancakes.

Semi-final product:

I cannot wait to douse these mofos in syrup tomorrow! I’m thinking this will be my post-workout lunch.

Off to watch the season premier of Modern Family. I love me some Phil Dunphy! ❤

So Many Recipes, Not Enough Meals!

You know what makes waking up at 5:35 am enjoyable? A sore throat, that’s what! Oh the lovely change of the seasons has hit me and cast a spell over me. In good news, my crappy Tuesday is in the past and I’m ready to tackle this rainy Fall Wednesday.

When it comes to your body feeling the pain after a tough workout, are you guys more of a 1 day-er or a 2 day-er? My body used to feel the burn of a good workout the next day, but lately I’ve transformed into the 2 day-er. My butt definitely is feeling the burn today, so I expect my upper body to reap the pain tomorrow.

You know what they say. No pain no gain! As much as I don’t enjoy certain parts of my body being sore, it just goes to show that hard work will pay off and that my body is getting stronger.

Morning Workout

  • 3.5 mile run
  • 1 minute plank
  • 2 sets of 15 stair push-ups
  • 2 sets of 20 rock climbers
  • 13 medicine ball lumberjack squats, each side
  • Stretching

It’s crazy how eating healthier meals and a new day can make you feel. Lately I’ve been so busy and have lacked the motivation to make a lasting dinner, but last nights’ eggs & toasts gave me a new-found obsession with making heartier meals.

This morning I stuck with my protein shake that looked like liquid chalk, appetizing I know, but I’ve been doing my Instagram and fitness magazine research and have found quite a few new meals and snacks I see in my future!

Do you guys get excited over finding a new recipe that you cannot wait to make?

The meals I’m very anxious to try include:

  • PB Fingers Pumpkin Protein Pancakes
  • Fage Greek yogurt with vanilla protein, chia seeds, blueberries & cinnamon
  • Protein Pancakes – 4 egg whites, 1 ½ scoops vanilla protein powder & blueberries
  • Banana Oatmeal Pancakes (Fitness Magazine) – 1 ½ cups soy milk, 1 cup rolled oats, 2 bananas chopped, ½ cup all-purpose flour , 1 tbsp plus 1 tsp baking powder

I have a damn good feeling that tonight’s dinner will revolve around pumpkin protein pancakes.  Is it dinner time yet?!

Before/Current Shots

Alright my lovely readers, the time has come to put up some full body shots to document my progress. I’m starting with these photos, but since I have no extra time in my mornings to take quality pictures, I’m posting these and would like to take better ones this Saturday morning when I actually have more time. Plus, I’d rather not take pictures at 5:30 AFTER I’ve been eating all day. I have to be as slim as possible. 😉

Saturday 9/22/12

My legs and ass look a lot smaller than they truly are, don’t be fooled! I only wear American Eagle jeans, as they’re the only ones that fit my curves and bodacious booty perfectly. For comparison, my AE jeans are always a size 14 Short, unless they’re stretch and I can fit into a 12.

I’m a “skinny fat girl,” a term that my brother introduced me to when he would discuss body types. A “skinny fat” person is anyone who appears skinny with clothes on, but once they’re shed, you’re not that skinny underneath. Case in point, me!

Tuesday 9/25/12

So there are several pictures to get started with, and I plan on posting stomach pictures once I start seeing results and feel comfortable showing my “former shelf.”

Side Note: Not sure how I feel about talking about the future but it’s boosting my confidence and is giving me the belief that I can do this!

Orange Marmalade Obsession

What’s up with me continually getting the “case of the Mondays” on Tuesdays? From here on out I’m going to plan on having fantastic Mondays and craptastic Tuesdays.

Monica, Rachel & Phoebe must be having a craptastic Tuesday too 😉

If today wasn’t the perfect day to start fresh and finally put in the hard effort to see results and get toned, then I simply don’t know what to tell you. This whole “don’t have a midnight snack” thingamabob is working, and for the first time in months I slept through the entire night! The only bad thing is that the 20 spoonfuls of peanut butter I inhaled last night latched on to my ass this morning. I felt sluggish all day, even after getting in my morning workout. WOOF!

Morning Workout

  • 3.5 mile run
  • 1 minute plank
  • 2 sets of 15 stair push-ups
  • 2 sets of 20 rock climbers… yeahhhhh this chunk-a-monk has been referring to the wrong exercise throughout my entire blog 😦
  • 2 sets of 20 skiing dumbbell squats
  • 2 sets of 13 standing side dumbbell crunches, each side
  • Stretching

Every morning I drive past Farm & Flower, the biggest farmer’s market that is open year round in Manchester, and after sitting at the light for what seemed like hours, I had the biggest urge to put my car in park and run and grab an orange and a banana.

So close yet sooooooo far away! 😦

Since I was having an off day, I decided to skip my lunch and tap into my sick time and left at 3 instead of 5 so that I could tackle my errands that I slacked on NEEDED to get done.

I picked up my brother a Nike Dri-Fit shirt for the last part of his birthday, grabbed a few different types of boxes/envelopes to mail his gift in, and then nervously went to Supercuts for a trim. I’ve heard horror stories about Supercuts and I was ready to rock the Miley Cyrus mohawk if they left bald spots. I wanted a cheap trim to hold me off until I visit my normal hairdresser. You see, I really didn’t want to pay $40 for a trim when I could get one for $15.99. Makes sense to me! I could buy a cute new workout top for the difference I saved!

After my haircut, I made a pit stop at my house, fueled up on a handful of grapes, raspberries and polished off the last few bites of tuna before heading to Gold’s for the R.I.P.P.E.D class. I had about 20 minutes to kill so I ran 1.5 miles with HIIT training, and boy did it feel amazing! I typically run at 5.8-6 miles, depending on how my body feels, but I was running at 6.4 and sprinting at 6.8 and I could have gone faster and longer had I had more time.

The R.I.P.P.E.D class left me feeling energized and pumped. I took a boot camp class with Kris, the instructor about a month ago and I instantly connected with her energy level and teaching style. She’s a lovable yet fierce Latina who always has a smile on her face.

Since Sunday’s brunch with Mike, I’ve had one meal on my mind, and since the only missing ingredient was picked up today, I knew EXACTLY what was going down when I got home.

Scrambled eggs and ORANGE MARMALADE TOAST. Can you tell what part I was most excited for? I might have to rename my blog, “Running on Orange Marmalade.”

Breakfast for Dinner

  • 2 eggs & 1 egg white scrambled with pepper and a little water
  • 2 pieces of whole wheat Arnold’s toast with orange marmalade (OMG NOM NOM NOM)
  • Ketchup to dip my eggies in
  • Side of pure happiness

I forgot how amazing breakfast meals are, and I honestly wish I could incorporate more healthy and lasting meals for my breakfast, but it’s difficult when you’re in the office from 8-5 and don’t have a stove at work! My idea is to make eggs the morning of, and bring the bread and marmalade in a to-go container.

Time to go wrap Ryan’s gift and get it ready for shipment tomorrow before posting several of my current pictures that will be used as my “before” pictures for when I get the results that will allow me to have my very own success story! 🙂

A Good Monday and Ready to Take Charge!

Happy Monday, and yes I mean happy! Due to promptly falling asleep at 9:20 last night, after reading a whopping 2 pages in my new book, yes I said 2, I woke up on the right side of the bed, which technically was the left. Have you ever noticed that you prefer to sleep on one side of the bed, whether it’s the bed at your place, your boyfriends or on a guest bed? I always chose the left side of the bed with my ex-boyfriends, even when that meant I was stuck against the wall and had no arm dangling room. Men are just awful at setting up a room. Really.. a bed against the wall? Maybe that’s why those relationships didn’t last… Let’s just go with that. 😉

My upper body is still recovering from the ridiculousness I put it through this weekend (Wii boxing, golfing, rowing, picking up nachos loaded with 20 lbs. of bbq chicken and cheese), that it was still sore when I swung my arms around this morning before working out. I ended up getting a nice run in, although my strength workout was limited post-run. Instead, I focused more on stretching and trying to loosen up my old bones.

Morning Workout

  • 3.5 mile run
  • 1 minute plank hold
  • 2 sets of 20 mountain climbers – the second set was awful! I think it’s due to a “fun” weekend
  • 50 crunches and 50 side-to-side crunches
  • 100 jump rope
  • Stretching

Yesterday during brunch with Mike, he commented on how tiny my stomach looked. Uhhhhh, he CLEARLY hasn’t seen me in a while as I’ve actually put roughly 4.5 pounds onto my frame. Being my gay best friend, he is doubly honest and blunt. A gay man will tell you how it is, but a gay best friend, will tell you also tell you he can see your split ends. Thanks captain obvious. Since making my pact with you guys about holding myself accountable if I snack during the middle of the night, I have yet to do that!

It’s time for me to suck it up and get on the “Before and After” band wagon. Doing that will only motivate me more to stick to healthy choices in the kitchen, and since I don’t want to embark on this journey and not have any progress to show for it, it’s time to get dirty!

I’m going to take pictures tomorrow and will most likely cut my morning workout short so I have enough time to take pictures. You lovelies will get my “clothed” before pictures, while I’ll keep a set of the bra and shorts pictures for my eyes only, at least until I’m comfortable to show what down undah looks like. Warning: war zone. Okay, okay, it’s not bad, but it’s not “hot damn” status either.

Before the gym I enjoyed a Chobani Strawberry Banana yogurt for the first time in at least a week and a half, and holy moly was it an amazing reunion!

My afternoon workout almost included me eating shit on the treadmill. Mind you this all went down while I was sanitizing the treadmill. Yeah, wasn’t even working out. I was trying to clean my sweat off the very front of the treadmill so I was crouching down while holding onto the hand grip. I thought I was pushing all the treadmills forward, but in reality the belt was moving backwards with me on it! I quickly aborted the situation and got the hell out of the ladies gym before I made an even bigger fool out of myself. I went and did additional cardio in the regular gym before heading back to work and being productive.

Afternoon Workout

  • 2 mile run
  • 15 minutes elliptical
  • 2 minutes rowing – if you recall my bitching from the beginning of my post, you’ll realized why I stopped

My boss has had her daughter’s Yankee Candle Fundraising catalogue sitting in the work kitchen for the past few days and I finally stopped and flipped through it. I found about 8 pieces that I want to buy, only 1 item being a candle, the rest being the most adorable decorative holders!

How cute are these, especially the cookie jar candle holder! Is it too early to start decorating for Christmas yet? As much as I hate the cold and snow, I LOVE LOVE LOVE the time from the middle of November until New Years when the holiday spirit is in full blast.

Time to go doodle Christmas trees and listen to my Christmas radio station on Pandora… and you think I’m kidding.
